Browser War: Firefox 3.6a1, Opera 10.0, IE8, Safari 4, Chrome 4 Benchmarked Part IV

We're almost at the end of our browser analysis. We've looked at startup and install times, memory and CPU usage, and performance in synthetic benchmarks. Along the way we've discussed numerous aspects -- security, user interface, and plug-ins, to name a few. Now we have two final topics to look at -- how the next generation browsers fare in rendering tests and how well they support the latest web standards.

Green tea, multivitamins linked to younger age

THE CHINESE have been sipping its benefits for centuries. Now the lowly tea leaf is getting the attention it deserves from the rest of the world.

The green tea leaf, in particular, has been keenly eyed by nutrition experts. Its direct and indirect health benefits are sweeping, including its ability to reduce one’s risk of contracting colorectal cancer and heart disease, as well as promoting healthier bones.

Green tea contains plant compounds called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has been found to block the action of an enzyme that breaks down noradrenaline. Noradrenaline regulates many metabolic functions, including the heart rate and the release of energy from fat. So by allowing more EGCG to stick around may actually boost metabolism, says certified nutrition specialist Jonny Bowden, PhD, in his book “The Most Effective Natural Cures on Earth.”

Prison Break actor takes on villain's role in Heroes.

PASADENA, Calif. - There are no villains in film or TV, Robert Knepper insists, only heroes who are misunderstood.

Knepper, fresh from playing malevolent prison escapee Theodore ``T-Bag'' Bagwell for four seasons in the cult thriller Prison Break, is about to take on a potentially even more dastardly role in Heroes, now entering its fourth season.

Knepper plays the serial thriller's new villain, Samuel Sullivan, the mysterious leader of a travelling carnival that has become home to those people with special abilities who, for whatever reason, are reluctant to deal with the outside world. Samuel, as Knepper's character will become known, is a kind of Mr. Dark in a Heroes season that, on the face of it, will echo the darker, more mysterious elements of the Ray Bradbury classic Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Apple Updates Fix Mac OS X, Snow Leopard, iPhone OS

Apple, Inc. has issued updates fixing 33 vulnerabilities in Mac OS X Leopard and problems in Mac OS X Snow Leopard and the iPhone OS. The vulnerabilities center on problems with third-party products included with Apple's OSes. An analyst suggested Apple should separate the third-party apps from Mac OS X for faster updates.
